Carribean cruise

A Carribean cruise is a popular vacation and can be categorised as:

  • Eastern Caribbean -  usually 7 nights and they usually include St. Thomas, St. Marteen, and Nassau, or the cruise liners private island
  • Western Caribbean cruise -  usually includes Jamaica, Cozumel Mexico, Key West, Progresso Mexico, Belize
  • Southern Caribbean usually consists of  San Juan, Aruba, Barbados, and most of the deep southern islands.

Cruise liner speed

The cruise liner speed depends on the ship’s design, mission, and schedule, with newer ships cruising at  a  higher speed.  Most of the latest cruise liners have a speed of between 20 and 24 knots  and the average speed is usually lower.  One knot = 1.5 miles per hour.

Identification

When a passenger arrives at the port to check in to the cruise line, he or she will receive a key card which will serve as the room key, charge card for anything he or she  buys on the ship (like drinks, souvenir) . The key card is also a pass to get on and off ship in each port.

When a passenger first boards the ship the security personnel will have him insert the key card into a scanner and then will take a photo  that is included in the magnetic strip on the card. Each time he or she gets off ship they will need this key card and many times also a photo ID (passport or driver’s license). This card allows the cruise liner to keep an accurate track of all passengers entering and/or leaving the ship.

Services

Most major cruise liners charge their passengers a one time fee which covers most of the facilities they use on the ship.

These include

  • Meals
  • Room service
  • Shows
  • Other activities on board the ship
  • Certain beverages - coffee, tea, juices, lemonade

Not included are:

  • Alcoholic beverages, soft drinks
  • Photographs by the ships photographers

Buying a cheap cruise ticket

You can save a lot of money on the price of a cruise ticket depending on when it is booked, the cabin selected and the booking agency used.

Most cruise ships give substantial discounts if the tickets are booked well in advance as they can plan accordingly. As the date of the cruise approaches, the price of the ticket usually increases. Sometimes, due to unforeseen circumstances, the price may decrease, in which case, the passenger can ask for an additional discount. Most cruise liners will  pass on the discount to the passenger. By travelling during the poor weather (like during the hurricane season) a passenger may get cheaper tickets

Like most rooms and houses, the price for cabins on a cruise ship can vary depending on the view. The cabins below the deck usually are cheaper and it may not matter much, since most passenger spend most of the day outside their cabin.

Online Travel portal and cruise liner websites may often give dicounted rates, but some times a better discount may be obtained by a travel agent . The travel agent may pass on part of the commission to the passenger resulting in lower prices.
