Now that my kids are getting older, it’s a shame, but some of the lovely things we used to do together as a family are now non-existent.
Currently my youngest is in the depths of researching for a huge history project she has been set at school.A few years back this would have meant a little trip to our local library and a pile of books coming back home with us.
Unfortunately nowadays she carries out all her research on the Internet, which for me is a real shame as I used to love our trips to the library. The library was at the end of her school path, so we often popped in after school to have a look at books we could borrow. It’s funny but even though we may have just popped in for a couple of history books low and behold before you know it you are piled up with loads of children’s books.I think my daughter’s record for one visit was a staggering 18 books. The weight of those books for my walk home was unbelievable, but that didn’t dissuade her from piling more and more books on.
To be honest though, it wasn’t only my daughter who took advantage of the books on offer in the library. I have been known to take out a few romance books in my time.I can get totally absorbed in a good old romance and the brilliant thing about the library is that once you have completed one book, it’s simply a case of returning it and choosing a whole new story.
In our local library they also have a section for second hand books, and you can sometimes pick up quite a bargain.I will say that the books aren’t always in the best condition, but when you are only spending a few pence, you can’t really expect perfect.
Now don’t get me wrong, I think the Internet is a wonderful invention, it is such a shame though that unfortunately some of the good old things we used to enjoy will probably become a thing of the past.Sadly, I can see that as time goes by there will be a steady decline in the amount of libraries in our area and I think this will be a real shame.
